We know that even in steadier economic times fashionistas have to be weary of rampant consumption. The new studded boot, leather bag or drop crotch pant have little regard to our waning wallets. Add to this usual onslaught of “it” accessories and well-cut cloth a woefully depressed economy and it’s enough to make even the most frugal fashion-lover despair.
Here are a few tips from the AsianCajuns (lovers of fashion and coupons alike) to get you through this slump without sacrificing your keen eye for stylistic flair:
1) Spend Your Money on the Stuff that Counts
The little black dress, a well-cut blazer and a crisp white shirt are still worth paying for quality. If you’ve got a strong base (i.e. a basic piece that fits you well), you can inexpensively accessorize on top (see #2) and look like Audrey Hepburn In “Sabrina” without going to see Givenchy. These pieces don’t have to be designer or recognized labels (we found the perfect white button-up at a thrift store last year). Just go with what fits you best, and you’ll look like a million bucks.
2) Accessorize
Stock up on different types of scarves (wool, cotton, silk etc.). Again, we have to mention our preeminent style icon here: before she was famous and met Monsieur Givenchy, Audrey Hepburn seemed to have “one skirt, one blouse, one pair of shoes, and a beret, but she had fourteen scarves. What she did with them week by week you wouldn’t believe.”* That means you don’t even need a hulking mass of accessories in your closet- just get inventive with two or three of your favorites.
Layered necklaces and bangles have had their hey-day, bring back accessories that have a little oomph! Invest (not very much) in a jaunty black beret and immediately you’re transformed into a Sonia Rykiel girl. Throw a silk scarf around your neck, waist or head, and you look Parisian-chic. Pull on a pair of soft tights with the seam running up the back of the leg (H&M have an inexpensive pair) and you look like a lady with a je ne sais quoi.
If you are looking for something more of-the-moment, we’d suggest hitting up your closest Target or even Walmart for studded belts and aviator sunglasses.
3)DIY
Just one of the many reasons we love the fashion blogosphere is the generosity of the bloggers who are willing to share their tips and secrets to making the perfect shredded t-shirt, body chain or feathered headdress. If you’ve thought about making something but are stumped, chances are another fashionista has gone through the same thing and worked it out for you. Turn on you computer and get crafty!
