Like every other senior girl I'm looking for the perfect prom dress. The problem is I don't have the typical teeny bopper style. I try to be a little more high fashion than that. I don't want excessive bedazzling and cutouts, on top of a synthetic satin fabric. I want to look sophisticated but still young and fun. This combination is almost impossible! Can anyone help me find a dress?
Or just show me your own prom dress from past or future proms!

I love non-traditional prom attire and wish I was more creative at your age. My Jr. year I wore a dress I bought from the Delia's catalog. Sheer lilac shirt-dress with tuxedo ruffles and a white slip underneath. Got lots of compliments!
You should research independent designers and DIY'ers.www.etsy.com is a great treasure trove of independent crafty people and a lot of the stuff is amazing. Also look into vintage dresses.
I'm not sure how wild or what your style may be but I've been a Shrinkle fan for years. Her creations are off the wall and definitely creative. There are many other talented people. I highly recommend going the indie route.

Hey Hannahk, I am so excited about your prom, you will have a blast. I recommend a long dress in maybe a blue or purple to bring out your eyes. If you want a high fashion look, go for an updo.

I'd say avoid (like the plague) places like Jessica McClintock, Cache, Glitz, or any of the typical "prom" stores as well as dept stores. Stick to boutiques.
My prom dress was Betsey Johnson, but pretty subdued considering. It was black, sort of sheath-like, bias-cut but with an uneven hem. Spaghetti straps, but then there were little pearls sewn in all over. They were more concentrated toward the bottom, and spread out as you looked up. It was and still is my favorite dress.

Also, if you wanna steer away from the typical prom look, avoid any sort of updo. My friends and I affectionately (or not so much) call anything that looks similar to a prom updo "prom hair"...lol.

ooh good point. i have a person who has been cutting and dying my hair for years and she did my hair for prom last year. it was a lovely half up half down do. also, i bought my dress from a boutique last year - its a lovely white twelfth street by cynthia vincent dress, and I think I'll go back to that store as my first stop. its hard to find a nice evening boutique that isn't PROM CITY! haha.

I think you will find a great dress that is not like the normal prom dress at this boutique. I can't wait to see what you choose hannahk.

Yes, good call on the boutique. Especially if you've had good luck there in the past. I always like to support the smaller stores with unique items when I can rather than the big chains that just have all of the same junk.
The half up thing is cool too...that's what I did! I got a couple of super cheapy hair combs with faux pearls on them to match the dress...turned out pretty nice. For something extra unique you could check out antique stores for vintage brooches and attach one to a plain hair clip or something.

Plus if you shop at a smaller store, your dress will be truly unique and one of a kind. You are going to shine at prom!

Ah, you're killing me...first making me relive the sneaker heels and now my prom! I had a McClintock dress.
But, to be fair, it was a forest green with a corset top and straight bottom. I'd like to think it wasn't TOO too bad.

I like the classic look. Make the dress as simple as possible and let the accessories mark your spirit.
I like the grecian look. Similar to this, (maybe more drape in the front )

Then add a feathered headpiece. http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=21722636
I think a feathered hair clip instead of a headband would do nice.

Hi dazzlin, I'm slowly figuring out how the forums work. I thought replies would show up on my profile page, but I see I have to open the link to see replies. Give me a week....or two. I'll be a pro!
