i noticed some comments that allude to the fact that people low ball other people's ratings to help them win contests- is this true? that's so mean! does lucky monitor this stuff somehow? how are contest winners determined anyway? inquiring minds would love to know... thank you!!
Forums: Lucky Wants to Know: low ball rating & contests
re: dazzlin
The lucky moderator has commented on some threads regarding this, so you may wanna browse the forums...as I'm sure they could answer your question better than I, lol. Basically its hard to control how others are rating, and yes, some people are mean and will give everyone low scores in order to make themselves have a higher average. However, I believe that this site is not about putting people down. People that don't use the site very often will come on here just to enter contests, and then are never seen again. There are some of us who really enjoy the feedback and tips that others give us, so we stick around and enjoy the site! You seem like the type of person that is a good addition to this fun place, so welcome! Don't let the meanies get you down! :)

re: Bimbi284
thanks for the welcome bimbi! it's unfortunate things like this happen- i've seen it on the glamour site too. i'll just filter it through and ignore it!

re: dazzlin
I second everything that Bimbi presented...you start to see who participates the most, and those are people with positive contributions who, as she said, stick around. Even though I am in one of the contests I don't vote others down; I give what I think they deserve on their own merits. Plus, isn't winning better when you know you EARNED it?

re: dazzlin
All of you ladies have fantastic styles and you are all five stars in my book.

re: stef42678
Steff and Alyabonfiglio, and Bimbi284,eboneyowens and others have been in contests and voted high marks for others, I have seen the postings. I agree with them that there are just a few who are mean and it is funny they have no pictures or profiles!

re: dazzlin
I guess their style isn't as "pretty" as "petty", huh????

re: dazzlin
Basically. Is it really that serious? Yes, it would be wonderful to win something but it's really that it's fun to do, and get the feed back. For me, anyway. There's no reason to sabotage in order to get 15 seconds of fame on the internet.

re: dazzlin
lol i think its barely even 15 seconds :)

I know, right? Get over yourself. (Not you...I hope you know what I mean.)

re: dazzlin
It's pretty crude. It's not even that big of a deal. If you win- you win...it's just a friendly contest but people seem to be soooooo....harsh

re: dazzlin
I submit they're actually quite stupid. For example, I can tell you I'm fairly suspicious of one person highly rated in the denim contest. There are several comments from users who have made no other comments except on her picture and have done nothing else on the site. Now maybe I'm overly paranoid, but it seems...not correct to me. But hey, if you want to win that bad, take it, it's yours...am I the one being petty now? Hahaha.

re: dazzlin
I would love to win a contest, but I pretty much give up once I reeceive low ratings.

re: dazzlin
I thought we talked somewhere else when I saw a mean posting and got so upset? Alyabonfiglio didn't you say"don't feed the trolls"?

re: dazzlin
I still don't get when I'm the first to rate or last and give spot on and it shows 2 points or 5? When I give 5 I want it to show 5. I would never rate anyone a 2! It should be all on personal style, again not family members voting,as in stacking the deck? See past forums as in the diamond ring contest, etc That was when I got mad and rated myself because I like Steff have no family on Lucky? Mine wasn't even in a contest.

re: dazzlin
Of course I don't feed the trolls! No, I think the OP was just asking if there was anyway to check for making multiple accounts to vote for yourself, purposely voting others down, etc.

re: dazzlin
I try to comment and give stars on how much I like the style. I have seen some comments that were on here before I came to this site. Sometimes when I gave 5 it shows like 2.8 and I dont know whats with that though. With the urban elegance I did not even know what the style was I looked it up posted it and never thought I would win till I got my email saying I won. I know mostly of you all and I try to gave you guys and vote for you cause I want you to win like I did.

re: Farrielle2
you looked great in your shot and totally deserved the win!!
Posted 10/22/2008 at 07:49 AM
re: Farrielle2
Yeah, you certainly won on merit. I just wish everyone else could play fair...but I suppose if they're not, they'll be outed in the end. At least I hope.

re: dazzlin
YEAH, I KNOW IM NO PAGENT WINNER BUT SOME OF THE PICS ARE LIKE, HUH? AND THEY ARE SCORING HIGHER THAN MINE. MAYBE I AM JUST BIASED ON MY OW, BUT IN ALL HONESTY I LOOK AT SOME REALLY GREAT ONES AND WONDER WHY THE SCORE IS SO LOW. ITS CRAZY

re: dazzlin
Well tell me people don't vote down on purpose when I go from like 3.6 to 2.6 in a few days. So I guess all the people just joining have much better taste than everyone who voted previously.
Oh! Or, it could be they want to make themselves look better.

re: dazzlin
It is really hurtful - and it's especially difficult to explain to my 10 year old daughter why the photo she helped take of mommy isn't doin too well out in cyber voting world!!! Oh well, she gets the benefit of our experiences to boost self-esteem as my ratings plummet! LOL

re: dazzlin
Kim, just explain to your daughter the absolute truth: that one person has decided to play unfairly and that others have followed her bad example. Your daughter might relate better to this situation if it is compared to something with which she is familiar such as the child's game, "Follow the Leader."
Alyabonfiglio, I share your skepticism. What is happening is all too obvious, I think: One person is sitting at her computer - not unlike the Wizard of Oz - and is signing on to this site using a variety of names in rapid succession. This person(s) then begins the tedious job of systematically going through all of the photos, rating them the lowest possible rating. This is how the person keeps her consistent place at the top. Others below her will move down further and further, eventually landing on page 2 or 3, etc., but this person and, sadly, others who have followed her example, will tenaciously maintain their positions as "first page news."
It is not fair, and one person's willfulness to win at all costs sets in motion a mentality that implies, "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.. It's really too bad because it's not just the numbers of contestants that are being lowballed, it's the reputation of the contests themselves. I doubt any of this is slipping past the moderators, though. It will all come out in the end.
