Take a minute to think about the photos you gravitate towards on personal style websites. Regardless of the subject’s body type or actual outfit worn, the best photos have a common thread. Good lighting, balanced composition and a focused photo are all key elements to taking a great daily outfit shot.
Here are a few little tricks to make the most out of capturing your stylish ensemble.
Get outside – Natural morning light makes for the prettiest colors and best contrast. If you’ll be out and above later in the day, try to find a semi-shaded spot so you avoid high noon shadowy light.
Camera Placement – You’ll look taller and leaner if you position your camera between waist and knee height. I like to use park benches, fire hydrants and other architectural stairs or steps I can find. Stand between 10 and 15 feet away from the camera.
Keep Clicking – Set your camera to take multiple photos with a timer. Try 10 to 15 pictures at a time and check to see if the lighting is working out. If things are looking good, take another round of shots to ensure there’s a few with a good smile and no red eye. On the other hand, if you’re not happy, move to another location and start again. On average I take between 40 and 100 photos each day to make sure I get a few I like.
Head to Toe – Your hair, makeup and shoes are all a part of your look. You wouldn’t wear your favorite outfit with a bag over your head and barefoot, so make sure to include your smile and your shoes in your photos.
Move around – we all have our “good side”, however, make sure to change poses while you’re taking your shots.
Editing – Before you upload your pictures, take the time to edit your photos. Maybe you just need to crop your photo to appear more balanced or adjust the lighting. Don’t be afraid to make your pictures look their best!
